Meet our coaches

Micah Scarbrough

Head Coach

BJJ Black Belt Micah has been training in martial arts for over 28yrs. Including Muay Thai and San Shou kickboxing, as well as wrestling in high school. After discovering BJJ in 2006 he decided to to dedicate the rest of his martial arts career to grappling. Micah has functioned as an assistant striking coach for kickboxing and MMA. He has also worked as a competitive gymnastics coach for the past 12 years, as well as a strength and conditioning coach. Micah was also an affiliate athlete for the World Freerunning and Parkour Federation. Hosting the MTV Ultimate Parkour Challenge Crash tour in Austin, TX and one of the first certified movement/ parkour coaches in the nation certified by by the WFPF. BJJ Black Belt Agema Jiu Jitsu & MMA – Striking and Fundamentals Coach CPR certified & first aid trained 20+ athletes on the USAG top 100 list in the last 6 years Coached multiple champions in different disciplines/sports WFPF Level 1 coach

Trey Mundine

MMA Fundamentals coach...and other things

BJJ Black Belt Trey began training jiu-jitsu in 2006 under Phil Cardella and was awarded his black belt in 2020 from Derrick Garza. Shortly after beginning training, he started competing in BJJ tournaments and soon moved on to mixed martial arts earning a 2-1 record. After earning his purple belt in 2009, Trey began teaching at the original Relson Gracie Austin academy. Since then, he has served as co-head grappling coach at Kamal Shalorus’s Arete training center and assistant instructor at various schools including Dark Clan Fight Lab, 10th Planet Austin, and Relson Gracie South Austin. Trey has also had the honor of coaching and cornering numerous professional and amateur mixed martial competitors. Presently, he prefers to focus on nogi submission grappling and MMA but can occasionally be caught training in the gi. Over the past 15 years, Trey has had the benefit of training under and with some of the best grapplers on the planet including Craig Jones, Lachlan Giles, Daniel and Diego Moraes, Robert Drysdale, Relson Gracie, Royler Gracie and Paulo Brandao. David Schade

Kickboxing instructor

BJJ Brown Belt For the last 20+ years he has been traveling the country competing and training both horses and riders to engage in the ancient combat sport of Full Contact Jousting. Through his travels he discovered BJJ and Muay Thai and fell in love with both arts. Over the years, he has trained at a lot of different gyms across the country, receiving his BJJ purple belt in 2017 under Clayton Lyon. David and his wife have trained with Insight every spring since 2015, and they have now decided to make Bastrop and Insight BJJ their home. 2017 1st place – Grappling Industries No-Gi (advanced) 2nd place – Grappling Industries Gi (purple belt)

Nicholas Riley

Coach

BJJ Brown Belt Nicholas is a father who enjoys training with his wife Taylor. He started training BJJ in February 2018 to help lose his dad bod and do something fun with his wife and kids. BJJ not only helped him lose over 30 pounds but prepared him physically and mentally to become a firefighter. He wants to continue to train and help others find the best within themselves while giving them a community to belong to. Competition Record 2021 2nd place – IBJJF Nogi Pans (Bllue Belt – Heavy)

Taylor Riley

Coach

BJJ Purple Belt Taylor is just a mom who happens to enjoy friendly competition and arm bars. She started BJJ in January 2018 after much prodding by her husband and training partner Nicholas. Growing and learning with her team mates has been such a blessing to her life and she hopes to be able help others on their journey as well.
